“Both Ambika and I share the heritage of the Western Ghats where we grew up,” Mangal says, adding, “And there’s always been this longing to get back to it.” The couple’s decision to set up a second home here stemmed from their desire for a healthier life in a natural environment.

The Better India

Leaving the corporate world behind, Mangal Shetty’s quest for an eco-friendly lifestyle led him to build a sustainable home in Karnataka’s Aghanashini estuary and establish the Panchabhuta Conservation Foundation, an NGO that works with local communities to develop green enterprises.

River Aghanashini is one of India’s last few free-flowing rivers, unfettered by dams and following the same course for thousands of years to empty into the Arabian Sea at Kumta, near Gokarna in Karnataka. At the restorative Panchabhuta, Retreat @ the Foundation, located a three-hour drive from Goa’s Dabolim airport, there are many ways to enjoy its gifts, through clifftop views, boat rides, paddle-boarding and delicious meals

As old as the Western Ghats—a mountain range that stretches 1,600 km along the western coast of the Indian peninsula—and possibly older than the majestic Himalayan range, lies an estuary in the Kumta taluk of the Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka, India. This is where the Aghanashini River, one of the few virgin rivers in the world, flows, originating in the Western Ghats and joining the Arabian Sea.
